The event, entitled TourismAfrica 2006, organized by Strategic Business Meeting (SBM SA), was held in Geneva from the 10th to 15th September, 2006 with the official support of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), African Union, UNCTAD, UNESCO AND African Development Bank (ABD), World Bank and the State of Geneva.

It is in that perspective that the TourismAfrica event with take place in 2006, reserved for professionals, and solely dedicated to Africa and conceived to contribute to the development of its tourist industry.  The September 2006 event will gather in only one venue and for a short duration African and international decision-makers and will foster targeted encounters and strategic decision-making with a view to developing markets and cooperation.

The world tourism industry undergoes a remarkable expansion. With an 11% growth in 2005, Africa registered the highest growth rate for international arrivals worldwide. In 2005, the African continent received 36.8 million visitors, in other words 10 million more arrivals than in 2004 (1). In addition, the African continent's Travel & Tourism Economy (direct and indirect impact) in 2006 is expected to account for 9.9 % of GDP and 16,060,000 jobs (7.8 % of total employment)(2).

Africa has a strong tourist potential: the numb er of visitors will rise to 47 millions in 2010 and to 77 millions in 2020 according to the present assessments. These figures could even increase if a certain number of actions were undertaken.
